Wayne Rooney has claimed that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer cannot afford to go another season without a trophy at Manchester United following Cristiano Ronaldo’s sensational return to Old Trafford.

The 36-year-old edged a step closer to completing his move to United from Juventus.

At the weekend after undergoing a medical in Lisbon and is expected to be in against Newcastle

Man United have seen a steady progression under Solskjaer but have yet to end their silverware drought during the manager’s tenure.

And, after a blockbuster window, in which Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho already joined the side, Rooney believes his former team-mate no longer has any excuse.

‘Ole will certainly know that he’s in a position now where he needs to start winning these big titles with the players that he’s brought in,’ Rooney said.

‘[Ronaldo] still one of the best players in the world,’ he added.

The Derby manager also warned Ronaldo’s new team-mates that they will have to work harder to play alongside Cr7.

‘Where would I play him? As a striker,’ Rooney added”

‘He’s a striker and the other nine outfield players behind him will probably have to do a little bit more work

‘because when you’ve got someone like Cristiano you want him fresh around the box.

‘He still wants to be the best and I’m sure he will have a big impact on them this season.

‘When you bring someone in like Cristiano what it does for the players is bring in that winning mentality every day to the club.’

‘For the likes of young players like Mason Greenwood, Marcus Rashford and Scott McTominay to have Cristiano would be a big help for them.’

Rooney said he was confident his old team-mate wouldn’t join their bitter rivals because it ‘didn’t seem right’.

‘I just felt there was no way he was ever going to sign for Manchester City.’

‘I just felt it didn’t seem right, it didn’t feel like it was ever going to happen.

‘His agent did his job because I knew that the minute there was any hope of him going for Man City, United would never let it happen.’
